Winter Skin Survival Guide
Winter in New England is a beautiful time of year. It can however, cause havoc on your delicate and defenseless skin.
We have put together a Winter Skin Survival Guide to help keep your skin healthy this winter. By just following a few simple guidelines, you can keep your skin hydrated and younger looking all winter long.
- Invest in a humidifier for your home. Being exposed to the dry heat inside your home can stress your skin. The use of a humidifier will add valuable moisture to your skin.
- Drink an average of 6 to 8 (8 ounce) glasses of water a day. This step not only hydrates your skin, but also allows your body to rid itself from the toxins that can disrupt your skin's balance.
- Eat a clean diet, which consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, minimal amounts of lean meats, low-fat dairy products such as Greek yogurt, whole grains and healthy fats such as olive oil. Limit your intake of simple carbohydrates, caffeine and sugar. Consider adding daily supplements to your diet based on the advice of your health care provider, such as evening primrose oil, fish oils, and supplements that contain Vitamin E, C and B complex.
- Make time to exercise! Minimal exercise can have a positive impact on every aspect of your life, especially your skin. Just 30 minutes of aerobic activity 3 to 4 times daily can make a difference.
Face
- Before cleansing your face, be sure to remove your makeup using a mild, chemical free make up remover such as Bioelements Makeup Dissolver.
- Cleanse your face using a mild cleanser which is free from harsh chemicals and/or abrasives, such as Bioelements Flash Foam Cleanser. Use a soft washcloth and wash with warm, not hot water. Dry your face completely with a soft towel.
- After cleansing, apply a mild, professional moisturizer that's appropriate for your skin type such as Bioelements Absolute Moisture or Bioelements Crucial Moisture. Since your skin tends to be drier during the winter months, you may need to switch to a heavier moisturizer during that time.
- Don't forget to pay special attention to your eyes! The skin around your eyes is thinner, lack's oil glands, is prone to allergic reaction and more delicate. Because of this, it's recommended that you use a special eye cream daily. Applying a daily eye cream will not only soothe your skin, but also slow down the signs of aging. Professional eye creams such as Bioelements Eye Area, or Bioelements Multi-Task Eye Oil and Crème are great choices.
- After cleansing each evening, apply a special night cream to both the eye area and the face such as Bioelements Sleepwear and Bioelements Sleepwear for Eyes. Incorporating overnight treatments into your nightly routine will give you an extra rejuvenating punch that will help you revitalize and strengthen your skin.
- While abrasive exfoliants can be very beneficial to your skin, limiting the type and frequency during the winter is critical. Use a mild exfoliate such as Bioelements Measured Micrograins no more than once weekly on your skin. This gentle scrub is a great way to buff away your dry, scaly skin. Dry your skin and follow with Bioelements Restorative Clay mask. This 10 minute treatment mask cleans out pores, revs-up-circulation and hydrates your skin leaving it smooth and soft.
- Don't forget the sunscreen! The harmful rays of the sun can be powerful in the winter, especially as the sun reflects off the snow. Applying sunscreen will protect you from those harmful rays and keep you safe. Choose a professional sunscreen that is safe and free from chemicals such as one of our EltaMD Sunscreen products.
Hands
- Washing your hands frequently is one of the most important steps for staying healthy, however the constant use of antibacterial soaps can contribute to your moisture deprived skin. Always remember to completely dry your hands after washing.
- After each washing, applying a thin layer of hand lotion.
- Exfoliate your hands weekly using a mild scrub.
- Before bed, apply a heavy hand cream such as glycerin, petroleum jelly, or Burt's Bees Shea Butter Hand Repair Cream along with a pair of cotton gloves.
- Before going outside, remember to protect your hands by always wearing gloves and applying a sunscreen.
Feet
- After washing your feet, make sure to dry them completely, giving special attention to the area between your toes.
- Each morning, apply a light moisturizer before putting on your socks.
- Weekly, exfoliate your feet using a pumice stone or foot scrub to slough off all of the dead skin.
- Before bed, apply a heavy foot moisturizer such as glycerin, petroleum jelly or one of Burt's Bees specialty foot products and apply cotton socks.
Skin
- Cleanse your skin daily, using mild soap and warm, not hot water.
- Every few days, use a loofah in the shower to exfoliate your dry, scaly skin.
- After showering, immediately apply a thin layer of baby oil to your wet skin surface (avoiding the bottoms of the feet) and then towel dry. This is one of the best and most inexpensive ways to hydrate your skin.
