Are You Affected By Folliculitis?
Have you ever experienced painful red bumps after shaving? Does this irritation seem to last forever? You may be experiencing a condition known as folliculitis.
Folliculitis usually starts when a hair becomes distorted and gets trapped under the skin. The tissue surrounding the distorted hair becomes red, swollen and irritated. In more severe cases, the follicle can even become infected and be extremely painful. Take a look and see some interesting facts about folliculits.
What causes folliculitis?
This condition is usually caused by damage to the hair follicle. In most cases, damage occurs from shaving, but can also develop from excessive perspiration, friction from clothing, and acne.
Men with curly hair commonly experience a condition on their beard known as pseudofolliculitis barbae. In this situation, damage occurs when the hair curls back into the follicle and gets trapped under the skin.
Once the hair becomes damaged, it is very easy for infection to set in. Staphylococcus or Staph infection is the most common type of bacteria that usually invades the damaged follicle.
Where do most people get folliculitis?
Both men and women experience this condition. The most common areas are:
Women - Bikini area, underarms, facial/neck area.
Men - Beard/neck, back and shoulders.
What are the signs and symptoms?
This varies depending on what part of the follicle is affected.
- Superficial folliculitis - Itchiness, irritation, small red bumps/pimples, puss-filled blisters.
- Deep folliculitis - Large swollen irritation, pressure and pain at the infection site.
What can you do to treat folliculitis?
Usually, superficial folliculitits can be treated by applying frequent warm compresses and by having a professional remove the hair with either a tweezer or needle. Topical antibiotic cream can then be used for mild inflammation. In more extreme cases such as deep folliculitis, you should always seek the treatment of your physician.
Unfortunately, unless you permanently remove the hair that is causing the folliculitis, the problem will usually resurface. Electrolysis and laser hair removal are the only effective methods for permanently removing the troublesome hairs. This solution not only leaves your skin smooth, but folliculitis free!
